I am Learning to Make Simple Inferences.

I am in Sven group for reading and we have been learning to make simple inferences. An inference is when you know something even though it is not actually written in the story. You can make an inference by looking for clues in the story and illustrations.

My Reflection
I think that I did a good job of thinking about the main character. It was a bit tricky because we had to draw her and write the things about her. I made some inferences about Mrs McFee like how she likes flowers and hates magpies. I like reading in the class library corner.

I am Learning to Solve Subtraction Problems by Counting back from the Largest Number.

I am in Toru for maths and we have been learning how to solve subtraction problems by counting back from the largest number. We started with single digit numbers and moved on to double digit numbers.

My Reflection
I think that I am okay at solving take away problems by counting back. It is trickier to solve take away problems than plus problems. Holding the big number in my head and counting back is a good way to solve the problems.

I am Learning to add Detail to my Writing.

Room 8 has been learning how to add detail into our writing to make it more interesting. We can think about the questions: Who? What? Where? When? How? and Why? to help us add this detail.
We have recently started swimming again and chose this shared experience to write about.

Every Friday it's swimming. All of the Year Twos went swimming. We went in the pool before lunch because we haven't been swimming for a long time now. At first it felt cold but then when I started moving around I got warmer and warmer. Everyone was splashing and going under water. Some people even also had on goggles to see under water. We also had Jump Jam in the pool. Then Mrs Koroa said we can have three minutes free time. I started playing games and trying to swim but I couldn't. Then it was a miracle. I felt brave.

My Reflection
I think that I did a good job with my writing. I think that I did a good job because I added detail. I think that it is tricky to add detail to my writing because you have to think about lots of different things. I think that I will try to use detail in my writing in class time to make my writing more interesting.

I am Learning to Draw Patterns.

We have been working on our wearable arts for the school display. Room 8 has made flower head pieces decorated with different patterns. We have worked really hard on these!

I am Learning to Identify 2D and 3D Shapes.

In Room 8 we have been learning about Geometry. We have looked at different 2D and 3D shapes and their different parts. We learned that shapes have different numbers of sides, faces, edges and corners of vertices.
We had a lot of fun making monsters out of different shapes!

My Reflection
I like the shape of my monster. It is a hexagon. She has six sides. If she was 3D, she would be a hexagonal prism.
I found geometry hard because there were lots of different parts and things to learn.
The easiest part was learning the names of the shapes because I knew some of the names already.

I am Learning to Write a Cinquain Poem.

In Room 8 we have been learning how to write a cinquain poem. These poems have a special order that the words have to be put in. We have practiced writing cinquains in our writing books and published our most recent poems on Spring.

Success Criteria:
- All words must relate to the topic.
- The second line must contain two adjectives.
- The third line must contain three verbs with an -ing ending.
- The fourth line must be a four word sentence about Spring.

Spring
Wonderful, lovely
Jumping, melting, rolling
Spring is so warm
Sunny

My Reflection
I think that I did a good job with my Spring poem.
It wasn't too hard and wasn't too easy to write cinquain poems. I think that the four word sentence was the hardest because it could only have four words.
The easiest part was writing the topic at the top.

I am Learning to Discuss Characters and Settings of a Text.

I am in Sven group for reading. We have been learning about characters and settings in stories. We read a story together and talked about what the main character was like and what sorts of settings were in the story.

Book: Matthew Likes to Read.

Main Character: Matthew
Matthew likes to read. He likes to read lists and signs and directions on mushroom soup. I think that Matthew tries very hard to read. He also reads newspapers and books. We think that he would be in a high reading group because he reads really well and practices a lot. He sounds the words out. We don't think that he would be a very loud person because he is always reading. We think that he would be a very good friend because he would be able to help his friends read. Matthew can be cheeky because he tricked his mum at the supermarket!

Settings:
There are a lot of different settings in this story. One setting is at Matthew's home, he reads food packet instructions in the kitchen. He also reads newspaper in the lounge. The lounge looks like a dark and quiet place, it is a good place to read. Another setting in the book is the supermarket. There are a lot of fruits and vegetables there. There is ice cream too - Matthew told his mum that it was on the list, but it wasn't! There are lots of things to read at the supermarket, like packets, shopping lists and price signs.

My Reflection
I think that it is sometimes easy and sometimes hard to talk about a character in a story. A character is someone who is in the book. It is easier to talk about the main character in a story than the others.
I think that it is easy to talk about the setting of a story because you know where it is. It is easy because there are pictures that you can look at.

I am Learning to Use Punctuation Correctly.

Last week we celebrated Matariki with a pyjama and breakfast morning at school!
It was lots of fun and gave us good ideas to write about. Our focus in writing has been on using different types of punctuation correctly.

I need to:
- Use at least two different types of punctuation.
- Use the punctuation in a way that makes my writing more interesting.
- Put the punctuation in the right places.

This morning the year twos came and had a Matariki breakfast. Then we got to have rice bubbles, corn flakes and milo. Then after my first milo ... I had another milo hm so yummy! Then I almost forgot to put my stuff in room eight but when I saw someone spill the milo I went "oh no".

My Reflection
It is hard to write a lot of sentences. I am proud of how I put all of my full stops in the right places.
Next time I think that I could try to use some different punctuation, like exclamation marks and question marks.

I am Learning to Say Before and After Numbers to 20.

I am in Toru group for maths. We have been learning to say before and after numbers in the range from 1 to 20.

I need to:
- be able to count forwards and backwards from 20.
- know what number comes before a number within the range 1 - 20.
- know what number comes after a number within the range 1 - 20.

My Reflection
Some of the numbers were not hard for me. The smaller numbers are easy.
It is easier to say what comes next than to say what comes before.
I think that I can say before and after numbers for numbers that are bigger than twenty.

I am Learning to Recognise Contractions.

I am in Max group for Reading, we are working at Green level. We have been learning to recognise and read contractions.

I need to:
- read contractions correctly
- understand that they are a shortened version of two words
- match a contraction with the words they are short for

My Reflection
I am proud of how I matched all of the words correctly.
It can be tricky to read the words because sometimes I think they are different words.
If I get stuck when trying to read contractions, I can ask my friends to help me.

I am Learning to Float with an Aid

Room 8 has been visiting the school pool on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. We have been learning to be safe in the water and using this time to gain confidence and to enjoy being in the water.

To be able to float in the water with an aid I must be able to:

- feel comfortable getting my face and hair wet
- use a pool noodle correctly (under my armpits)
- keep my feet off of the ground

My Reflection
I am proud of how I can swim on my tummy with the noodle.
I like being in the water because it is fun!

I am Learning to Make Rhyming Strings

I am in Thumper group for reading. We have been learning to make rhyming strings to help us read new words.

I need to:
- Think of words that have the same end sound.
- Think of words that make sense.

My Reflection

I am proud of how I thought of my own rhyming words.
It is easy to sound out new words when you know what they rhyme with.
It can be tricky to sound out the words when they sound the same but are spelt differently.

I am Learning to Read a Bar Graph and Answer Questions

I am learning to read a bar graph and answer questions

I need to:
*read the question
*read the data (information) on the graph
*identify the lowest (fewest) and highest (most) bars
*read the quantities
*compare the data on the graph

*answer questions about the data (information) on the graph

My Reflection

I am proud of how I could see which bars were biggest and smallest.
It can be tricky to see what number the bars were up to.
Next time I could ask my friends to help me.

I am Learning to use Full Stops and Capital Letters

I am learning to use capital letters correctly:
I use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence.
I use a capital letter for the word ‘I.’
I use a capital letter for names of things.

I am learning to use full stops correctly:
I use a full stop at the end of a sentence.

My name is Cassidy. I like dancing. Also singing. My favourite song is called you can count on me by Bruno Mars. My favourite colour is red.

My Reflection

I think I did good full stops. I found it easy because I knew how to spell the words right. Next time I could make my writing better by using capital letters in all of the right places.

Welcome to Year 2 2018

Welcome to my Learning Journey for 2018.

I am in Year 2, Room 8 and my teacher is Miss Clegg.
